Why we started indexing AI tools.

We built Index because finding a genuinely good AI tool had turned into its own full-time job — twenty browser tabs, conflicting "best of" lists, and half of them written by nobody who'd actually opened the tool.

Our Story

Index started from a pretty ordinary frustration. Every time a new AI tool launched, the search results filled up with lists that all looked identical — same ten tools, same copy-pasted descriptions, no sign anyone had actually spent real time using them. Meanwhile, the tools that were genuinely useful for a specific task often didn't show up at all, buried under whichever ones had the biggest marketing budget.

So we started doing it the slower way: opening each tool ourselves, testing it against real tasks, timing how long it took to get a usable result, and writing down what actually happened — including when a tool was mediocre, which most "best of" lists conveniently leave out. That became the directory you're looking at now.

We're not trying to be the biggest AI tools list on the internet. We're trying to be the one you'd actually trust a recommendation from — the difference between a list built to rank in Google and a list built by someone who opened every single tool on it.

What We Actually Care About
01
Tested, not guessed
Every listing is opened and used by an editor before it's published — we don't rank tools we haven't tried.
02
No pay-to-rank
A tool's position on our rankings is never influenced by whether it has an affiliate program with us.
03
Honest about the bad parts
If a tool has real limitations, we say so — a review that's all praise isn't a review, it's an ad.
04
Written for beginners too
You shouldn't need to already understand AI to understand our guides. We explain things in plain language, on purpose.
05
Kept current
AI tools change fast. Rankings and pricing get re-checked monthly, not published once and left to go stale.
06
Built for the reader first
If a tool isn't genuinely good, it doesn't get a "Best of" badge — no matter how well it might convert.
How We Actually Test a Tool
01
We use it for real tasks
Not a five-minute skim — we run the same real-world prompts and workflows a normal reader would actually try.
02
We check the pricing ourselves
We confirm what the free plan actually includes and whether the paid tier is priced fairly for what it adds.
03
We compare it side-by-side
Every tool gets measured against its closest alternatives, not reviewed in isolation.
04
We re-check it monthly
Tools update constantly. Rankings and pricing details get revisited, not left to quietly go out of date.

The Index Editorial Team
Reviewers & Directory Editors
A small team focused on one thing — actually using the tools we write about before we recommend them. We don't outsource reviews to writers who've never opened the product.

A note on how we make money: some links on this site are affiliate links — if you sign up through them, we may earn a commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects which tools we recommend or how we rank them; every tool is scored the same way whether or not it has an affiliate program with us. Full details in our Affiliate Disclosure.
